Brazilian Wax Guide: What to Expect at Your First Brazilian Wax in Tempe Arizona
Preparing for Your First Brazilian Wax – What to Do Before and After
Congratulations on booking your first Brazilian wax, or even just thinking about booking one! If you’ve never been waxed before, it’s completely normal to have questions about how to prepare your skin and what to expect.
As a waxer who specializes in Brazilian services, I always want my clients to feel confident, comfortable, and prepared before they come in for their appointment.
How to Prepare Your Skin Before Your Brazilian Wax
Before your appointment, it’s best to start exfoliating and moisturizing the area. This helps prep the skin so the wax can grab the hair properly and remove it from the root.
When moisturizing, I recommend using non-comedogenic lotions. These hydrate the skin without clogging your pores, which is important for preventing breakouts or ingrown hairs.
Just like the hair on our head, the hair in the bikini area benefits from moisture. When the hair and skin are properly hydrated, the wax is more likely to pull the hair completely from the follicle instead of breaking it.
Why Exfoliating Is Important Before Waxing
Exfoliating is another important step before your Brazilian wax.
Sweat, oil, and debris can build up in the hair follicle over time. Soap and water alone aren’t always enough to remove this buildup, which is why we introduce chemical or physical exfoliants into our skincare routine.
Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and helps free trapped hairs so the wax can remove them more effectively.
Some exfoliants I love include:
Raspberry scrubs
Retinol scrubs
Scrubs with jojoba beads
Scrubs containing pumice stone
These types of exfoliants provide a gritty texture that helps remove dead skin without being overly harsh.
Why I Don’t Recommend Sugar Scrubs for Intimate Areas
While sugar scrubs are popular, I usually don’t recommend them for intimate areas, the face, or sometimes even the underarms.
The texture can be too harsh for delicate skin and may cause micro-tears in the skin barrier. I also find it very easy to over-exfoliate these areas when using aggressive scrubs.
The same applies to things like:
Dry brushing
Net sponges or exfoliating cloths
Very rough scrubs
For sensitive areas, gentle but effective exfoliation is always best.
What to Wear to Your Wax Appointment
On the day of your appointment, try to wear loose and breathable clothing.
Tight clothing like leggings or jeans can create friction against freshly waxed skin and trap sweat, which may increase irritation.
Think of it this way: wearing tight clothes after a wax is almost like taking a shower and putting the same clothes you just worked out in back on. Your skin has just been cleansed and exfoliated, so it needs space to breathe.
Loose clothing helps keep the area comfortable and reduces the chance of irritation.
What to Expect After Your Brazilian Wax
During your appointment, I always try to educate my clients so there are no surprises during their first wax.
After a Brazilian wax, it is completely normal to experience:
Mild redness
Sensitivity
Slight irritation
This is especially common if it’s your first time waxing.
These reactions usually calm down within a day or two as your skin adjusts.
The 48 Hour Rule: Avoid the 3 S’s
After your wax, I recommend avoiding the 3 S’s for the first 48 hours:
No Sex
No Saunas
No Sweating
This includes things like:
Intense gym workouts
Hot showers that create steam
Pools or hot tubs
Each of these can introduce bacteria or irritate the open hair follicles, which may lead to infection, breakouts, or irritation.
A foaming cleanser for oily and acne prone skin that improves skin texture and diminishes breakouts with ingredients such as salicylic acid and tea tree to purify and restore balance to the complexion

Use 2-4 times a week to thoroughly cleanse skin and treat breakouts and skin impurities.

Adjust frequency if dryness and/or sensitivity occurs.

When to Start Exfoliating Again
During the first 48 hours after your wax, focus on keeping the skin hydrated. You can apply a gentle moisturizer or an ingrown hair serum.
After the 48-hour period, you can begin exfoliating again every other day to prevent ingrown hairs and keep the skin smooth between wax appointments.
Consistent exfoliation and hydration are key to maintaining healthy skin and getting the best results from your Brazilian wax.
